Dr. Shuvendu Sen on "India's Traditional Medicine: Relevance and Potential"

On the evening of June 16th, 2014, the fourth of the monthly open-to-the-public lecture-series “ Media India 2014-15” took place at the ballroom of the Consulate General of India, New York.

The lecture began with the opening remarks of Consul General of India, New York, Amb. Dnyaneshwar M. Mulay. He expressed his views on the Indian culture and tradition, and how the Indian medical system, originated thousands of years ago, formed an integral part of the culture.

Dr. Shuvendu Sen, Director of Medical Education and Associate Program, Director of Internal Medicine Residency Program at Raritan Bay Medical Center, started his keynote speech with a quote by Swami Vivekananda: “Education is the manifestation of perfection already in Man”. He said, the Indian medical system has brought out the goodness and calmness already in man. He first introduced the fundamentals of the Indian medical system: meditation. By closing the eyes, meditation strips out the bad visual distractions. He went on to introduce yoga and ayurvedic medicine and used several research results to prove the effectiveness of the methods. The most important was of Hans Berger who was a German neurologist, best known as the inventor of electroencephalography in 1924, His  discovery of the alpha wave rhythm known as "Berger's wave was discussed to prove the effectiveness of Yoga by Dr Sen. He concluded that being immersed in multiple stresses every day, the Indian medical system has become essential, of which the basis was to reduce stress.

Dr. Ronald Brenner, Director of the Behavioral Health Service Line for the Catholic Health System of Long Island, moderated the lecture. He commented on the beauty of the unity of mind, body, and the universe originated from the Indian medical ideas.

Ms. Anita Rana demonstrated Yoga on the stage. Many guests eagerly participated and followed her instructions, enjoying the relaxation of body and calmness of mind.

The lecture ended with a vibrant Q&A session. Audience and participants were mostly medical practitioners, students and distinguished mainstream American scholars who valued and appreciated the ancient Indian medical ideas, and expressed their interests in the synthesis of the western and eastern medical systems.

To keep the participants enlightened about the "India’s Traditional Medicine: Relevance and Potential" copies of book entitled "The Great Indian Yoga Masters" were distributed. Amb Mulay's concluding remarks about the research going on these medicinal systems and their scientific end-user certifications took the audience by surprise.
