NRI Certificate

There is no need to take an appointment. Applicants can visit the Embassy/Consulate on any working day. For submission of documents : 9:15 am - 12:15 pm. Delivery of documents : 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm. The service will be on first come first serve basis. Before, approaching the Consular Office to seek required service, applicant must be ready with complete application form and other required documents, as mentioned in the Embassy website. This is important to render better and quick service to the applicants.

Please apply strictly as per your jurisdiction for which you have verifiable proof of address. Following is the Consular jurisdiction of the Consulate: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont

The Embassy/Consulate reserves the right to reject attestation of documents, the contents of which are objectionable or contrary to the Rules.

Note: Consular Services are not provided to those applicants having Asylee or Refugee visa status.

NOTE: NRI Certificate will only be issued to Indian Passport holders.

How to Apply (in Person):

1.

Download the Miscellaneous Application form  and fill it up carefully. Each applicant is required to fill up separate Miscellaneous Application form  and affix his/her photograph on the same.

2.

On the basis of his/her Indian passport, applicant may submit a list of his/her entry/exit from/into India to confirm his total stay in foreign country during a particular or previous financial year (March to April). In case of any doubt, matter will be referred to the concerned agencies in India for clarification, which may cause delay to issue the NRI certificate. Entry/Exit List

Applicant with Indian passport may also submit an affidavit/declaration that he/she has stayed abroad for more than 182 days during the existing or previous financial year (March to April).

4.

Applicant, who wants attestation of document provided by an Indian University to get NRI sponsored admission for his/her relatives in India, may provide the same in original and a photocopy.

5.

Applicant’s current valid passport in original and photocopies of the first five pages and last two pages of the passport.

6.

Original and photocopy of the document showing valid US Visa Status.

7.

Original and photocopy of any of the following documents as proof of residence: US Driving License, Utility Bill, Lease Agreement, State Identity Card, and Mortgage Deed.

Note: Bank/credit card/mobile phone statements are not accepted as residence proof. 

8.

Carry all original supporting documents for presentation to the Consular Officer. Photocopies of these documents may be attached with the application.  Ensure that photocopies of these documents are legible.

9.

Fee:  A non-refundable fee of US$25 (twenty five) + US$2(two) towards Indian Community Welfare Fee (ICWF) per attestation. The fee may be paid through cash.

PERSONAL CHEQUES, CREDIT CARDS, DEBIT CARDS OR OTHER BANKING INSTRUMENTS ARE NOT ACCEPTED.

10.

If you want to receive the attested documents back through mail, please send a track able pre-paid return mailing envelope to the Embassy/Consulate at Consulate General of India, Consular Wing, 3 East, 64th Street, New York, NY 10065.

11.

Processing Time: Application will be processed and handed over to applicant same day.

How to Apply by Postal Mail:

1.

11.

Processing time: Five working days from the date of receipt of postal mail at the Embassy/Consulate. This is subject to submission of all requisite documents by applicant(s).
