Gandhi Peace Garden

To celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Consulate General of India in New York, Shanti Fund and State University of New York (SUNY) Old Westbury collaborated on the idea of having a “Gandhi Peace Garden”.

SUNY Old Westbury contributed to this initiative by donating land for this cause. Keeping in mind the shared democratic values between India and US and spreading the message of the Mahatma in the United States, 150 trees representing the 50 states of the United States are planted at the site.

In the Gandhian spirit the trees have been adopted by individuals and organizations in memory of their loved ones. The entire project has been financed in a democratic manner without any financial support from the government. This project exemplifies India's philosophy of living in harmony with nature and would also motivate the diaspora and the university students to study India and the Mahatma.

Gandhi Peace Garden was inaugurated by Mr Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India on September 24, 2019.
